1) Overfeeding & Free-Feeding
Leaving a full bowl out 24/7 leads to weight gain. Measure meals twice daily and reassess portions every few weeks based on body condition.
2) Skipping Enrichment & Play
Bored cats act out. Schedule 10–15 minute wand sessions and rotate toys weekly. Add vertical spaces and foraging games.
3) Litter Box Problems
- Too few boxes (aim for 1 per cat + 1)
- Boxes clustered in one area instead of distributed
- Strongly scented litters or boxes near loud appliances
4) Neglecting Dental Health
Dental disease is common and painful. Use cat-safe toothpaste and ask your vet about professional cleanings.
5) Unsafe Plants & Essential Oils
Many common houseplants (lilies, pothos) and undiluted essential oils are toxic. Verify safety before bringing them home.
6) Punishing Unwanted Behavior
Spray bottles and yelling increase stress. Instead, identify the need (clawing, energy, attention) and provide an appropriate outlet (scratching post, play, training).
7) No ID or Microchip
Even indoor cats can slip outside. Microchip, use a breakaway collar, and keep contact info current.
8) Skipping Grooming
Brush long-hair cats a few times weekly to reduce mats and hairballs. Trim nails regularly and offer scratching options.
9) Ignoring Subtle Health Changes
Changes in litter habits, thirst, or appetite can signal illness. When in doubt, call your vet.
10) Low-Quality, Easily Broken Toys
Cheap toys can shed parts or tangle. Inspect often, supervise strings, and replace worn items.
